On Saturday 11th November GLLUG had their November meeting at the Westminster University Campus on New Cavendish Street. The meeting was a joint Installfest/Introduction to Linux day and then followed by 2 technical presentations.
The installfest and Introduction to Linux day was organised with the Department of Electronics, Communication and Software Engineering, University of Westminster who kindly lent us their computer lab.
The Intro to Linux stands demonstrated the Linux multimedia applications, productivity applications and the Linux desktop. We gave away various distributions on CD and DVD and also distributed old copies of
Linux Format and
Linux Magazine that were lying around at home.
The event was very well attended with an estimated 100 different people visiting the event during the day with an average of 50-60 people crammed into the room at any one time. People brought their computers from home to test live CDs and install Linux.
The event was a great event to see regular members of GLLUG and also make new friends. We saw people from demographics that aren't usually seen at our events. It was fun to see young kids playing online games and handling the Linux desktop in an expert manner. They showed that Linux is really for users of all ages and abilities.
We had 2 technical presentations.
Roger Whittaker from
Novell Technical Services gave an in-depth talk on Xen and Virtualisation. Following the slides he demonstrated booting Linux as a virtual machine on top of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 and then booting FreeBSD and finally Windows on Linux.

Tushar Joshi (who runs the
London Linux User Group) gave a presentation on Backup and Disaster Recovery concepts. He covered the concepts around backup and then gave an overview of the available GNU tools - tar, find, diff, gzip and so on.

During the meeting we sold raffle tickets for 2 books that were donated by
Apress.com. Apress approached GLLUG during the recent LinuxWorld Expo and donated 4 books to the group - Thanks again for your generous donation.
We gave away the "
Beginning Perl" and "
Beginning SUSE Linux" books yesterday and raised £34 which has been donated to
Help a London Child.
There should be a meeting in December - more details to follow on this site.
