The this months talk will be about the Android kernel and will be
given by Sunny Aujla .

He will be talking about the history, a view of android in mainstream
linux, the Google changes, and the future of the Android kernel.

This month we have another change of venue, we are back at UCL! Ron
Gaston has kindly booked room 1.02 in the Malet Place Engineering
Building which if I remember correctly you have to enter through the
Roberts building.

UCL Campus map

If people could arrive for 1900, ready for the talk to begin at 1930.
At the end of the talk we usually visit the pub (Jeremy Bentham?) for
a few drinks, general chat and socialising.
The next talk is titled "Typesetting with Free Software Tools" and
will be given by Tethys.

After being introduced to the wonders of Unix at university,
Tethys was hooked. With the release of Linux a few years later,
he was able to use Unix at home as well, and has never looked
back. He has interests in digital typography, large system
design, and playing with LARTC. His career has alternated
between coding and sysadmin for various companies in various
industries. One of those was in the pre-press department of
a large newspaper group, where an interest in typesetting
became a profession for a while. He is currently at the
coding end of the spectrum, writing software for a small
company using statistical analysis to predict future trends.

We are returning to our previous venue at the University of
Westminster, in the Large Lecture Theatre. If people could arrive for
1900, ready for the talk to begin at 1930. At the end of the talk we
usually visit the pub for a few drinks, general chat and socialising.

Sean has a sign-in sheet organised on the day for people to sign so he
can get an idea of attendance.

The next talk is titled "Wire Shark and the basics of network traffic monitoring." and will be given by Nahual Marisi and John Sharp.

We have a slight change of venue, we will still be meeting at the University of Westminster (Cavendish Campus), but in Room C1.04. If people could arrive for 1900, ready for the talk to begin at 1930. I will try and get some signs made up to direct people to room C1.04 Hopefully there will be a trip to a local pub for social and technical chit-chat.

I feel the "I'm going" email's were unpopular and Sean had a sign-in sheet organised on the day anyway. So I think we should stick people just turning up and signing in. (ie you don't have to email the list or me explicitly stating you are going, unless you really really want us to know.)
There will be a talk for the GLLUG by Richard Jones on libguestfs[1] on Thursday 18th March at 1930. It will be held at the Cavendish campus of the University of Westminster, in the Large Lecture Theatre. I will try and get a more accurate description of the lecture theatre's location and post it to the mailing list and website. If people could arrive at 1900 to make sure we are ready to begin at 1930. After the talk I suggest we go to a decent local pub for a social.
NOTE: You will need to sign in at the front desk to gain access to the building.
At this event we have the following speakers/features:

Peter Brownell and David O'Dwyer built a scalable server infrastructure to host Schoolofeverything.com using (Drupal on Debian on) Amazon's EC2 cloud to be able to scale with growth - without the up-front expense. Did they find the switch from hardware servers to virtual machines a welcome move?

Shaun McDonald (CloudMade) discovered OpenStreetMap during his final year at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and has helped run field work in ever more exotic locations since. His talk will introduce the system architecture and data/tagging model. We will then learn the practicalities of the project and go out on our own mapping party of the local area before returning to refine/update our local map with the proceeds.

As usual, we shall decant to a nearby pub for drinks and food after the meeting.

We've currently got three speakers lined up:

Karanbir Singh — automated systems provisioning with Cobbler and CentOS. A
brief intro to cobbler itself and then a live demo on setting up real machines
and Xen + VMware virtual machines.

Cobbler is a Linux boot server that allows for rapid setup of network
installation environments. With a simple series of commands, network installs
can be configured for PXE, reinstallations, and virtualized installs using Xen
or KVM. Cobbler uses a helper program called 'Koan' (which interacts with
Cobbler) for reinstallation and virtualization support.

Matthew King — A beginner's introduction to Asterisk. An explanation of
SIP, IAX, Zap, and how they work in an Asterisk dialplan. He will also be
covering common pitfalls in Asterisk installation.

John Hearns & Mark Kenton — Beowulf Clustering
Some of the history behind High Performance Computing (HPC) with Linux,
and how it has come to dominate the supercomputing market.
Mark and John will be showing how Streamline Computing build, install
and monitor some of the most powerful compute clusters in the UK. These
are used in fields as diverse as astrophysics, high energy physics,
computational chemistry, fusion research, medical research, car engine
design, aerodynamics, jet engine design and crash modelling.
We will demo our Linux Cluster Monitoring Appliance, which does
lights-out management and health monitoring for clusters and discuss our
new SAFE deployment framework for clusters and general purpose server
farms.

There should, again, be time to fit in a few lightning talks after the last

HOLMES WILSON TALKS AT GLLUG, March 12th 2008.

The Greater London Linux User Group (GLLUG) announces a special guest
appearance from Holmes Wilson of Miro at the University of Westminster,
Cavendish Street Campus, on Wednesday March 15th 2008, at 7pm.

Miro is free, non-profit, open-source software for watching video online
that was downloaded over 2 million times last year.

Wilson will be talking about why Miro's free, open-source approach is
essential for fully realizing the socially transforming power of
internet video, and about why it's important for the desktop linux movement.

There will be time for questions, and drinks afterwards at the King and
Queen public house round the corner.

All welcome. No charge.

Date: 7pm, Wednesday March 12th.

About Holmes Wilson:
Holmes Wilson is a co-founder of Participatory Culture Foundation /
Miro. Previously, he helped start the Worcester Computer Co-op (an
organization that uses free software and recycled computers to start
computer labs in his city) and OpenCongress.org (a government
transparency project that gathers information on US legislation).

About Miro:
Miro is a free open-source desktop video application that is designed to
make mass media more open and accessible for everyone.
Television is the most popular medium in our culture. But broadcast and
cable TV has always been controlled by a small number of big
corporations. We believe that the internet provides an opportunity to
open television in ways that have never been possible before.
Miro is designed to eliminate gatekeepers. Viewers can connect to any
video provider that they want. This frees creators to use the video
hosting setup that works best for them-- whether they choose to
self-publish or use a service. It's the kind of openness that the
internet allows and that we should all demand.
http://www.getmiro.com

About the Participatory Culture Foundation (PCF):
Participatory Culture Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit based in
Worcester, MA. It was founded in 2005 with a mission to build tools and
services that give people more ways to engage in their culture. Miro is
its core project.

We've currently got three speakers lined up:

- Armijn Hemel - UPnP (in)Security.

Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) is becoming an omnipresent technology and
support for it is being added to more and more routers, gateways and DSL
modems. Chat clients (MSN Messenger), networked games and gaming networks
(X-Box Live and others) depend on UPnP to work correctly. Up until now, there
haven't been any real problems with UPnP, except for the occasional buffer
overflow. UPnP seems to be working just fine. But it's not! The protocol is
unclear and flawed by design and many implementations have security holes you
can drive a truck through, leaving your network open to a variety of
interesting attacks.
